The Drive for Five
Lunchtime at work on a Friday, and its the official company tailgate party; although the use of party and any other work related word is an oxymoron. They show the NFC Championship game on the ceiling using a meeting projector. Off in a dark corner next to a rusty pipe on a television with no A/V inputs, I get to watch the first half of the AFC Championship. Leading up to the second Steeler touchdown, Troy and his friend park next to me to do some scout work. Troy is from Denver originally, but he hates the Broncos, he's a casual Seahawk fans, but his passion is the Raiders. It's weird. Troy knows what the shit he's talking about.
This is the first Seahawk fan I've met who understands what's going on. What's more is that he has a photographic memory of the game. I'm hanging in there until the end of the second half so I can see the freaky-deaky-called-back-Jerome-draw-touchdown play. Troy is telling me each play before it happens. He's diagraphing the touchdown scores to his friend as the drives just start. This is entertaining. Troy's prediction is that Ben Roethlisberger won't get away with those tight passes against the Seahawk defense. I'm sure he's a homer but I trust him.
Back in the cubicle there is one man. He's from Montana originally, so even though its a ways away, technically its in the Seahawks region. He's smart about his jabs. Instead of trying to argue Xs and Os with me, he's smart enough to make fun of the fact that I think of football. I respect that. We made a friendly bet, Hawks win I cut my hair like Matt Hasselback; Steelers win he lets his grow like Troy Polamalu.
