I'm Serious

An older friend of mine from California was visiting her hometown in Ohio this past weekend. She stopped by to talk to her former babysitter, Mrs. Clemens. Mrs. Clemens just happens to be the aunt of injured game 5 (if there is one) starter Roger Clemens. Well Mrs. Clemens had been talking with Roger's mom (I feel like I'm six) and according to her, Roger is just fine and will be starting game 5 as scheduled.

Being only seven years younger then Roger Clemens, my friend recanted stories when she and her siblings met him as a teenager. For fun he used to lift them in lieu of weights, but even then he was still a chauvinistic jerk.

I'm Back, Mostly

In the last comments section, krusecontrol asks me what my beef with Leyland is. Let me first say that I truly appreciate questions like this and will be happy to entertain more. I will also try to respond to future ones in less then a month.

I originally had a very long, thought out, post about this. Then Leyland got hired somewhere, then we hired Jim Tracy, then Ken Macha was hired by the team that fired him. It was all crazy, and truthfully, I wasn't keeping up with it. This blog is what I think about baseball, and I wasn't thinking about baseball.

What I discovered this week is how much a Steelers victory we affect my motivation over the course of the week. No, this will not be a Steelers blog, although in the off season I hope to write about the general Pittsburgh sports scene: "Will the Penguins win a game," "The lack of good football blogs," "Is anyone going to check out our basketball team." Anyway, the point is I'm back, I'll try to write something at least once a week, and since I'm not going to let my self think about anything too long, it will hopefully be short, timely, and relevant.

But back to the question, what's my beef with Leyland? Here's the short answer. I don't want some old man hired for PR value running my baseball team. So Kudo's to Littlefield for hiring not so old of a man, and based on the response to any PG article written about Tracy since his hiring, I don't think PR value had anything to do with it either.

One thing I have noticed is that Tracy is not a character in and of himself such as Lloyd. Part of having a McClendon manage your baseball team is it distracts from the loosing. What do you remember most about 2001, was it the 100+ losses, or the skipper stealing first base? Hiring Tracy will hopefully put a lot more focus on the players. I don't think that's a sign of a good manager, but it may be a sign of management getting serious.

This is a blog about the Pittsburgh Pirates. My vision: to write about the games at the games.
